To the heavens...

Posted by WavyGravy Jul. 29, 2009 @ 10:29 PM EDT

During the summer, I was fortunate enough to travel with a small group of friends on a hike named Stairway to Haiku, a 3,922 steps stairway ascent to the summit of the Koolau mountain range. The hike was steep at times and the stairs would often disappear among the blanket of clouds giving the impression that you are ascending to the Heavens.

It was certainly the most difficult hike I've been on, and it was thrilling! Every rest-stop gave us another astonishing glimpse of the valley below and it leaves you wanting more. The final rest-stop led us to a old radar station but due to the weather condition, we weren't able to see beyond the clouds.

Unfortunately, the hiking trail is closed to the public due to trespassers leaving garbage, disturbing the peace, and parking cars every which way leaving the residents upset.

But that didn't stop us. :-) We ended up meeting in the early morning before the security guard arrived and after our hike, we were greeted by the security guard who was kind enough give us the history and his experience with the hike. All in all, it was a highly enjoyable experience. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend it. Explore your surroundings and Mahalo nui loa!

Shit, even if the landscape looks amazing I think I would never get up there. Then again, I'm afraid of heights. That thing of the "stairs disappearing" must be cool, though.

Ah, sorry to hear that Ismael but perhaps you can overcome your fear of heights? You can check out the newly uploaded photos to see what I was meant. Thanks for the dropby!

lol, I said please first. Now, if I said, "Upload more pics or I'm going to rape your ass." Then that is peer pressure.

That's awesome man. The hardest hike I went on was an 18 mile hike up a mountain where I go to college. It took all day/night to do and we actually missed our target area by 100 yards, but had no clue until we walked down from the mountain and saw where we were. If we would have just walked another 100 yards we would have made it.

Aug. 31, 2009 | 2:03 PM WavyGravy responds:

Whoa, 18 mile is one heck of a track. I'm suprised you guys finished it in one day, now that's extreeme. I'm sure it would have been worth while to see the final vantage point though.

Very cool pictures - wish I lived/visited rural places like that.

Also, weren't you a different name...?

Oct. 29, 2009 | 6:46 PM WavyGravy responds:

Hey Timmy, I say no matter where you live, you can spot the scenic views if you do a bit of exploration. :-)

My previous alias was BR.
