During the summer, I was fortunate enough to travel with a small group of friends on a hike named Stairway to Haiku, a 3,922 steps stairway ascent to the summit of the Koolau mountain range. The hike was steep at times and the stairs would often disappear among the blanket of clouds giving the impression that you are ascending to the Heavens.
It was certainly the most difficult hike I've been on, and it was thrilling! Every rest-stop gave us another astonishing glimpse of the valley below and it leaves you wanting more. The final rest-stop led us to a old radar station but due to the weather condition, we weren't able to see beyond the clouds.
Unfortunately, the hiking trail is closed to the public due to trespassers leaving garbage, disturbing the peace, and parking cars every which way leaving the residents upset.
But that didn't stop us. :-) We ended up meeting in the early morning before the security guard arrived and after our hike, we were greeted by the security guard who was kind enough give us the history and his experience with the hike. All in all, it was a highly enjoyable experience. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend it. Explore your surroundings and Mahalo nui loa!
